<p>I&#8217;ve had my picture taken with Julie Piantadosi many times before. She&#8217;s been a regular speaker at Worldwide Salon Marketing seminars for several years. But this one is particularly noteworthy, for one reason only.</p>
<p>It was taken the day before I found out that Julie is soon to be <em>nationally famous</em>. I am sworn to secrecy at the moment, but I can say this:</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">At yesterday&#8217;s all day event in Melbourne, Julie held scores of salon owners and their staff enthralled as she told how she&#8217;d gone from bankruptcy at the age of 21 to the owner of a chain of successful salons in Australia and the USA, with more than 500 staff &#8211; which is why she is now in demand as a speaker at corporate events in many parts of the world.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>I know that this is going to raise eyebrows for all salon owners. I have finally seen what some salons are trying to be!  And it is not pretty&#8230; If you have ever MISSED lunch trying to fit clients in, then this is a MUST read!</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.worldwidesalonmarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/spork1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5758" title="spork" src="http://www.worldwidesalonmarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/spork1-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>For a long time now it has been the &#8220;this is how we do it&#8221; mentality that has slowed down so many salons that I can not keep count of the numbers. All because we are &#8220;conditioned&#8221; to not think outside the square. It has killed off more salons than any GFC or &#8220;recession&#8221;.  A well intentioned new salon owner opens, or buys their first existing salon&#8230; (And this is where the plot thickens).  Now that we have the passion, ambission and skill &#8211; what do we do now? I know what we do-</p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>THE SAME AS EVERY OTHER SALON!!!</em></span></h3>
<p>Well let me tell you that this will not work. Cannot work, and even deserves to fail.</p>
<p>&#8220;But I am a good technician&#8221; I hear you say. I know that all salon owners are great at what they are technically taught to do. No doubts about this at all. However, when you are training for your trade, they do not teach you how it is that you HAVE to run a business. Nobody tells you that staff will steal from you, or not show up, or make it so that you have to fire them. They do not tell you how it is that you are to let the whole universe know that your business is out there. So the question has to be asked:</p>
<p><strong>Why should you be the 5% of businesses that survive?</strong> What are you doing to make your salon stronger and more unique than all the others that exist. Are you making sure that you are taking lessons from those people that have used marketing formulas in their business? Do you listen to how it is that other salon owners seize opportunities to make their salons grow? How can you make sure that you are the &#8220;lion&#8221; in the salon jungle &#8211; the one who gets eaten last?</p>
<h2>The answer is really simple &#8211; Don&#8217;t be a SPORK!</h2>
<p>Sporks &#8211; for those who are not sure &#8211; are a tool that TRIES TO BE EVERYTHING TO EVERYBODY! ( They are a cross between a spoon and a fork.  It  tries to cover 2 bases, and in the end it does a bad job 0f both. )</p>
<p>You have to learn how it is that you stand out from the sea of salons that exist. Only by having the right tools and the right mentors can you successfully change your salon from a &#8220;same as everyone else&#8221; salon, into a well defined, structured salon that is the expert in the field.</p>
<p>So how do you find out how to be different? Where do you go to discover how all these salon owners are going great, even when it is a little quiet? Where do I go to &#8220;meet the Experts????&#8221;</p>

<p>I’m going to keep my travel arrangements secret in future. Back in April, Michelle and I arrived in the UK the day the Icelandic volcano erupted and shut down Europe’s airspace for weeks. On Saturday, we landed in New Zealand on the day the Shaky Isles experienced their worst earthquake in decades.</p>
<p>No doubt emergency services all over the world are now nervous about us visiting fire and pestilence on them too.</p>
<p>There was no nervousness among New Zealand’s salon owners however. Despite – or perhaps because of – the less than robust economy in the land of the Kiwi, we welcomed a dozen new members to the Inner Circle <em>Premium </em>marketing &amp; mentoring program during yesterday’s Salon Profit Secrets seminar at the harbourside Hilton Hotel in Auckland.</p>
<p>New Zealanders are an almost universally optimistic people. Of more than 100 salon owners and staff in the room, there was none of the ‘woe-is-me’ attitude common among small business owners of say, the USA.</p>
<p>When I urged the Kiwis to ‘go out and sell something, your country needs the business’, it was met with nodding agreement and enthusiasm.</p>
<p>Our New Zealand distributors, <strong>Chris &amp; Rachael D’Aguiar-Sanders</strong> did a great job of attracting salon owners to fly in to Auckland from all over the country for this event, including at least 15 of our existing members whom I’d never previously met.</p>
<p>Among them, IC member <strong>Paul Davis</strong> of <em>Pureskin Clinic</em> in Ponsonby could barely wipe the smile from his face as he told the audience his salon had just enjoyed its best July in five years.<br />
<strong>Phil Newman</strong> and partner <strong>Nikki Smith</strong> only joined the program and got their Toolkit in July, just as they started their hair salon in distant Wanaka, in the southern alps near Queenstown.</p>
<blockquote><p>“It’s amazing,” says Phil. “We just followed the program exactly, and our sales immediately tripled. I’m a numbers kind of guy, and I’ve worked out that for every $1 we spend on ‘Toolkit-style’ marketing, we get no less than $12 back.”</p></blockquote>

<p>Another IC member, <strong>Bedelia Shepherd</strong> (one year) flew in from Nelson, at the top of the south island, and told of how her salon’s sales have increased by no less than 60% since joining the program.<br />
But there were many salon owners in the room – not, I might add, our Members – who told of how ‘tough’ things are.</p>
<p>How can this be? It’s the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">same economy, all over the country</span>. The owners of our member salons are no more intelligent, and certainly no ‘luckier’ than any other salon owner.<br />
The difference can only be one thing: they’ve taken the trouble to educate themselves on what works in salon marketing, they’ve acquired the tools to help them implement what works (eg the Toolkit) and they’ve taken Massive Action.</p>

<p>There’s always one in every crowd. In fact I’d be surprised, if not disappointed, if there wasn’t at least one stand-out, Olympic-standard, world-champion <em>naysayer</em> in every marketing seminar I run for salon &amp; spa owners.</p>
<p>This week in Melbourne, as I demonstrated the differences between typical ‘pretty’, branding-style marketing that most salons &amp; spas are told to use, and ‘my’ kind of Emotional Direct Response marketing, I put two ads on the screen side by side.</p>
<p>One was a typical, wasteful salon ad that failed every test in the Direct Response Marketing 101 handbook, and deservedly didn’t draw a single booking. The other was a typical ‘copy-intensive’ ad our Inner Circle members are familiar with – this one brought in 35 new clients in a single week.</p>
<p>But there was one in the crowd who wanted to argue.</p>

<p>At least she spoke up. There were bound to be other doubters not game enough to show their hand. So I did my best under time pressures to explain why this salon owner’s opinion about her marketing just doesn’t matter. The <em>only</em> opinions that matter are those of the customers…and they vote with their credit cards.</p>
<p>The ONLY valid test of any ad or flyer is the return on investment it generates – not what it looks like, how well it strokes your ego, or how many glowing comments you get from friends or family.</p>
<p>That is NOT to say that all Direct Response marketing must, by its very nature, be ‘ugly’, copy-intensive, bereft of pictures, with no appealing visual features. Quite the opposite. Well-used photos or graphics can often increase an ad’s pulling power. But they must earn their right to occupy valuable and expensive advertising real estate. They must <em>sell</em>. Using pretty pictures or graphics for their own sake is an almost criminal waste of money.</p>

<p>I was wasting my breath – the naysayer in the room didn’t get it. Needless to say, she did not join the Inner Circle coaching program and leave with her Essential Salon Owner’s Marketing Toolkit  tucked under her arm.</p>
<p>But 15 other Victorian salons did get it, especially when <em>Inner Circle</em> members like <strong>Mark Gibbs</strong> of <em>Shellmark Hair Shack</em> (18 months) and <strong>Kirsty Cuthbertson</strong> &amp; <strong>Jasmine Dwyer</strong> of <em>Adore Skin &amp; Body Therapy</em> (6 months) got up to do a ‘show and tell’ on their experiences.</p>
<p>Mark Gibbs reported his and wife Shelley’s salon had doubled their turnover in the past 18 months. Kirsty Cuthbertson reported her little two-person beauty salon’s takings for June 2010 were up by $15,000 over June the previous year.</p>

<h2>The true difference between success and failure in the salon business.</h2>
<p>There&#8217;s a good reason that 95% of hair &amp; beauty salons will never make any real money&#8230; and just 5% will make almost ALL the money. The reason is simple; those in the top five percent simply KNOW more than the rest. And they know more because they take the time and make the effort to educate themselves on what works in business. And ACT on it.</p>
<p>Those are the only kind of salon owners we work with, which is why it&#8217;s such a pleasure when so many turn up at our Salon Profit Secrets seminars, the latest one in Perth, Western Australia yesterday.</p>
<p>They came from all over the city, and many flew and drove several hours from as far afield as Geraldton, Kalgoorlie and Busselton to be there. It&#8217;s the difference between the vast majority and the elite few who are prepared to do <em><strong>what it takes</strong></em> to find the keys to success.</p>
<h2>Special &#8216;closed door&#8217; brainstorming session for Inner Circle Premium members.</h2>
<p>For our West Australian Inner Circle Premium members, it was a chance to brainstorm and network with each other in a special &#8216;closed door&#8217; session we set up for Members only at each of our Salon Profit Secrets seminars. For me, these events are a welcome opportunity to catch up with so many members I see maybe once a year. So it was a delight to hear first hand the success stories of salon owners like young mother (of twin boys) Tegan Messineo from Body Firming &amp; Beauty in Bunbury, Lovynia Worrall of Elev8 Hair (also from Bunbury), Jade Brown who drove for 7 hours to be there from her salon in Kalgoorlie, and Wesley Savage of Savage Hair in Perth.</p>
<p>They were among 16<em><strong> Inner Circle Premium</strong></em> members -- many of whom brought staff with them -- who joined another 35 salon owners and staff seeing &#8216;my&#8217; kind of salon marketing for the first time. What they discovered clearly blew their socks off.</p>

<h2>Brand new &#8216;Second Edition&#8217; toolkit launched at Perth seminar</h2>
<p>The Perth seminar was the official launch of the Second Edition of the now-famous Essential Salon Owner&#8217;s Marketing Toolkit -- the first major revision since the kit was launched back in 2004. <h2>Multi-Million-dollar salon chain owner provides a dose of Brutal Reality -- and a lot of laughs</h2>
<p>One of the biggest hits of the day was whirlwind that is <strong>Julie Piantadosi</strong> -- owner of a chain of hair &amp; beauty salons across the eastern states of Australia and the USA. Julie had the audience in stitches as she explained some of the brutal realities of managing a staff of more than 400, and the joys of employing a team of high-achievers who keep her salons running smoothly, while she juggles a corporate speaking schedule and a home life involving three small children!</p>
