<p>Nikki and Phil joined the program in July this year and have seen their takings sky rocket since then.  For those of you unfamiliar with Wanaka, it’s in a fairly remote location in the South Island and has a population of around 7,000 (which grows a bit depending on the season).</p>
<p>Nikki and Phil actually took over an existing premises in Wanaka and it’s fair to say that prior to them taking over, the business was on a downward slide, with few customers and the clients that did come in, simply paid whatever they wanted to pay.   It’s VERY hard to run a business like that!</p>

<p>So let’s break these results down a bit more&#8230;</p>
<p>All up for the printing, envelopes and newspaper ads the cost was $528 (*You can get plain envelopes from the Warehouse Stationary for around $20 for 500&#8230;so this would have saved Nikki even more money).</p>
<p>3 packages were sold at $99 = $297</p>
<p>31 packages were sold with an average spend of $130 = $4030</p>
<p>So that’s a total income generated of $4327 for a cost of $528.  A return of investment of $8 for every $1 spent&#8230;WOW!</p>
<p>If each of these clients were to spend on average $130 with Nikki and Phil every month for the next year, they would be worth over $1500 to the salon each.  So potentially they have just increased the salons turnover over the next 12 months by $51,000&#8230;.and that’s just from one promotion!</p>

<p>Now that I’ve had a little rant, back to the real reason for this blog.  To show you how NOT having a <em>Cast Iron Guarantee</em> can be fatal to your business.   A couple of weeks back it broke my heart to see a salon featured on TV 3 show ‘Target’ (<em>For those of you who are outside New Zealand Target is ‘Consumer Watch Dog’ show were they help out disgruntled customers with their problems and try to get them resolved). </em></p>
<p>This salon had literally ‘fried’ part of a client’s hair off during the colouring process with the only solution offered to cut part of her hair out.  The drama that ensued lasted 8 weeks and resulted in the salon finally giving the customer a refund.  Imagine the amount of people in that period who this client would have bad-mouthed the salon too&#8230;let alone shaming them on prime time National TV!</p>

<p>But there is a further twist to this story that I would like to share.  In 2009 this salon actually joined the Inner Circle program.  After they joined and got their kit, we had our first coaching call which went really well.  About 2 weeks later the toolkit arrived back on our doorstep.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the first things you learn as an <em><a href="http://www.beauty-salon-marketing.com/toolkit1.html" target="_blank"><strong>Inner Circle</strong></a> </em>Member is that your marketing has got to get the attention of the customers you are trying to attract.  Normally that is done with a compelling headline that evokes some sort of emotion and entices the customer to read on, see what’s on offer, then hand over bucket loads of their cash to you!</p>
<p>I remember one of the first marketing exercises that Greg Milner (who was our mentor at that time) gave us when our salon D’Aguiar: hair.skin.nails was accepted on to the <em><a href="http://www.beauty-salon-marketing.com/toolkit1.html" target="_blank"><strong>Inner Circle</strong></a> </em>program back in 2007. He sent us a ‘door flyer’ that was used by a Pizza company, owned by the daughter of copywriter Mal Emery.</p>
<p>So we tweaked the flyer to suit our salon, attached a string to it which was used to hang it on door handles and offered the occupants of the house a <span style="text-decoration: underline;">free treatment</span> ‘no strings attached’ to get them to come into our salon.</p>

<p>For months Rachael and I walked around our neighbourhood hanging the flyers on people’s door knobs, and it worked an absolute treat.  Every single time we delivered about 200 door flyers we would get 10 – 15 new clients and we would get phone calls from people telling us that they thought our marketing was so innovative!</p>
<p>It was real ‘out of the box’ marketing and really grabbed people’s attention.</p>
<p>But what I wanted to talk about is a piece of marketing that really caught my eye and I wanted to share with you.</p>
<p>Most of us would be pretty angry at the thought of a parking ticket, right?  Don’t you just hate it when you are walking back to your car and all of a sudden your heart sinks when you see that dreaded little ticket, flapping in the breeze under your windscreen wiper!</p>
<p>Not too long ago, I took a drive down to our local seaside town Browns Bay, to post a couple of things and as I was walking back to my car I spotted this ‘dreaded little ticket’ and I instantly thought&#8230;my reg is up to date, my wof is up to date, I have only been parked in a 120 min space for about 20 minutes</p>
<p><strong>“So what the heck could I have been ticketed for!!!”</strong></p>

<p>It is simply not enough, and the results will show that.</p>
<p>Many Salon owners have been slaves to their business and staff, not paying themselves a wage for 1, 2, 10 even 20 years and most of these people have the perception that marketing is a waste of time and has to be expensive, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">but it isn’t</span>.  There are so many low cost strategies if not FREE ways you can market your salon.</p>
<p>Read on below to see how a low cost mailbox drop brought in $4158 for Toni Cunningham in the month of April&#8230;</p>
<p><em>“Hi Chris</em></p>
<p><em>Just wanted to let you know that April was our best month (even bet Christmas) it&#8217;s fantastic to see the salon growing continuously every month. I have to say couldn&#8217;t have done it without WSM.</em></p>
<p><em>I have to say it&#8217;s really rewarding after my husband and I have dropped 500 flyers to go into the salon and see 10 messages on the phone and then the calendar just fills up, its great.</em></p>
<p><em>The team get such a kick out of seeing the calendar fill quite rapidly.</em></p>
<p><em>I have only been in the program since December and have seen some great results, have made a part timer full time ,and we are in the process of hiring another stylist.</em></p>
<p><em>If this is what we have achieved in the last 6 months I say bring on the next 6 months.</em></p>
<p><em>Last month we took massive action, we did our monthly newsletter, Kids Free Hair Cuts Flyer (in school holidays), Autumn Flyer, along with all the New client letters, birthday letters, Raise the dead letters. </em></p>
<p><em>By far the Autumn package was the most successful,  we are dropping 500 every week and getting amazing results. It cost $45 for flyers and envelopes and we booked 42 packages at $99 and what is even better, is 34 were new clients.”</em></p>
<p>And from chatting with Toni recently she dropped another 500 flyers around the neighbourhood in the first week of May and got another 9 bookings (49 in total so far).  And of course these results do not include all the new and existing clients she got from her other marketing campaigns.</p>
<p>So Let’s break things down.</p>
<p>500 Flyers plus envelopes cost Toni $45.</p>
<p>She delivered 2000 flyers over 4 weeks in April, so the total cost for the flyers and envelopes was $180.</p>
<p>Each of those 42 clients spent $99, so an immediate income of $4158 (this does not include any retail sold).</p>
<p>Let’s say on average each new client is worth $1000 per year to Toni and that half of the 34 new clients became regular clients.  That would be an increase in annual turnover of $17,000.</p>
<p>Not a bad return for a $180 investment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If I said to you that every dollar you spent on marketing would give you $2 back, you would probably be very happy.  Well <em><a href="http://www.beauty-salon-marketing.com/toolkit1.html" target="_blank"><strong>Inner Circle</strong></a> </em><em>member </em>Terra Evans of Skin Deep Face and Body in the little seaside town of Browns Bay on Auckland’s North Shore recently launched her Mini Memberships program and made an astounding $25 for every $1 she spent on marketing these memberships&#8230;.WOW!</p>
<p>But before I let Terra explain to you how she did it, I want to tell you some of the benefits of having memberships in your salon&#8230;.</p>
<p>Memberships are a great way to get a huge chunk of cash up front from your clients or regular cash flow depending on the membership type.  If cash flow is a bit tight and you have a GST bill coming up then memberships give you that much need boost.  Or perhaps you want to go on a holiday or buy a new car then memberships give you more financial freedom so you don’t have to go grovelling to the bank for a loan!</p>
<p>Memberships are also a great way to guarantee your clients stay loyal to your salon for a long time and if a staff member leaves and starts working at a salon down the road it also stops clients going with that person.</p>
<p>You will often find that people on memberships will try out other services that they have never had before which opens up more opportunities to sell lots of product.  Remember these people have paid their money upfront, so they are going to feel like they have got money to burn when they come in for their treatments&#8230;.so SELL, SELL, SELL like crazy!</p>

<p><em>“I have been a member of the <em><a href="http://www.beauty-salon-marketing.com/toolkit1.html" target="_blank"><strong>Inner Circle</strong></a> </em></em><em>program for 2 months now. I decided to join because even though my salon is already doing well I knew it wasn&#8217;t working it to its full potential. So when I saw the ad for a free DVD on how to make more $ and do fab marketing it intrigued me and I phoned Chris to find out more.  The first thing I felt when I spoke to Chris was that I wasn&#8217;t being sold to, I was just being told the facts and I could also see how genuine and enthusiastic Chris was about the whole thing. <p><em> </em><em>I have implemented lots of new ideas but also things like new client letters which I knew I needed to do before I joined but didn&#8217;t know where to start. Well not anymore, with all the templates and ideas that are in the manuals I finally feel like I am taking control of my business! So far I have done New client letters 1,2 and 3, birthday letters, raise the dead letters, Queen of referrals, Valentines day specials, newsletters (mail and email), changed my messages, implemented the Happy form and testimonial form, cross over promotions, top client rewards, about to send out a school holiday special, ordered a new A frame for the sidewalk, increased my prices and am now using the Staff finder service to look for a new therapist so we have more spaces to fill so I can do some more marketing.</em><em> </em></p>
<p><em>The Best success I have had so far is with the Mini Memberships. I did like the Manual said (why try and fight it) and offered $350 worth of treatments for $200 I had 20 up for grabs and they had a 6 month expiry. .I sent out 672 texts @ 22 cents each = $147.84 and 252 emails @ 5 cents = $12.60 total cost $160.44 all to my existing clients. The response from the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">texts</span> was amazing within 24 hours of sending the message we had sold all 20 and had many more on a waiting list for next time.  So all up it cost me $160.44 to market and I had a return of $4000! Oh what a feeling!</em><em> </em></p>
<p><em>What was interesting about the whole thing is that it actually has encouraged the mini members to try different treatments that they have been thinking about trying, already I have 2 clients starting a course of IPL (which of course will end up costing them more than $350) another client is going to use hers towards microdermabrasion course (again more than $350) and 3 of the members have only visited us a few times so after they have used up there credit I am sure they will be addicted! The rest of the members I am going to test and measure at the end of the 6 months and see how many different treatments they have tried and how much extra retail they have purchased.</em><em> </em></p>
<p><em>So if you are nervous about trying mini memberships don&#8217;t be they work!! You can always try selling 10 and then when you see how well it works give it another go. Oh and by the way the clients love it and love you for it. It creates such a buzz and good energy which I feel is so important for true success. </em><em> </em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Wednesday last week I got one of those phone calls that made my stomach turn.  My mum, who lives with my dad on the Sunshine Coast in Australia, called to tell me that my dad had had a heart attack.  At the time I took the call I was pottering around the Sydney shops with my wife Rachael, killing some time before heading back to New Zealand after two action packed days at the <strong><a href="http://www.salonprofitsecrets.com" target="_blank">Salon Profit Seminar</a></strong> and Inner Circle Academy.  At that point, nothing else mattered and my primary goal was to get from Sydney to Noosa as quickly as possible.</p>
<p>In a state of shock from the news, Rachael and I walked into the Flight Centre Galeries in Downtown Sydney and explained our situation.  We were literally 4 hours away from flying back to New Zealand and needed advice and quickly!</p>

<p>Luckily, the fellow we had sat down in front of not only understands customer satisfaction but knew how to totally exceed all of our expectations of what a travel agent could do for us.  For those of you who saw John Lees presentation in Sydney, this guy, Rick the travel agent is definitely at the top of the triangle.</p>
<p>Rick explained before he called Air NZ that sometimes Airlines choose not to re-route flights and would end up charging me for a new flight.  To make matters even more tricky, the original flights were booked through a different online agent, both our bookings were made as one, so the booking had to be split to allow Rachael to travel back to NZ and me to fly to Brisbane, and the e-ticket didn’t even have a reference or booking number on it.</p>
<p>Rick spoke with the Air NZ agent and explained our situation clearly.  After a few moments he gave me a smile and wrote on a piece of paper and handed it to me&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>‘IT’S ALL IN THE WORDS YOU USE’</strong></p>
<p>Rick had managed to cancel my Sydney flight and re-route out of Brisbane a few days later for a small additional fee.   When he got off the phone, he explained that he had told the Air NZ agent the message they needed to hear. ..</p>
<p><em> ‘Tell them what they need to know.  It makes it easier for them to make a decision quickly’</em></p>
<p>&#8230;boy did this guy know his stuff or what?  Who has children and knows what happens when you give them too many options?  Yet sometimes we forget this in business and offer our clients so many options that we confuse them and they choose the easiest option – nothing.</p>
<p>Sure, this is what you would expect a travel agent <em>might </em>be able to do for you on 3 hours notice.  And had he stopped here we would merely have been satisfied customers, not raving evangelists for the Flight Centre.  Rick then went onto book a flight to Brisbane at the exact same time that Rachael needed to check in as well so that we could share a taxi, aware that we had missed our shuttle because of the unexpected news and proceeded to not only book and prepay a hire car to be waiting for me in Brisbane but had it pre-authorised because our credit card was playing up in the Australian system.  He even made duplicates of everything and told us which ones we’d need when we went to claim travel insurance.   And most of these he did simultaneously with a phone on each ear and his fingers on a website.</p>
<p>I had multi-tasking envy and wondered how any man could do this!!!</p>
<p>Like a true expert, Rick had thought of things that hadn’t even crossed our minds yet and he shared his knowledge with us making our experience so much better than it could have been.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s times like this that I realise that money CAN buy happiness.  A few years ago there is no way I would have been able to drop everything and afford 2 extra flights and a hire car no matter how much I wanted to be with my family.  Wealth buys you options and can help take care of you and those you love.  Without it, you’re screwed.  For years I worked for free for ‘the love of it’, now I work for profit and spend it on what I love and I’d never go back.</p>
<p>But back to Rick.  Now, I’m the type of guy that WILL NOT  purchase anything from your shop if you can’t even crack a smile as I enter, so I figure when I’m given exceptional service I am going to sing about it from the rooftops.  Rick had no idea when he made my day easier last Wednesday that I have the ability to pass on his merits to 20,000 people who receive this email.  Just like you never know when you impress someone who they know.  But you can sure as anything guarantee that they will tell <span style="text-decoration: underline;">everyone</span> that they know about you!  And if you’re ever in Sydney and need a remarkable travel agent, please visit my new friend, Rick Monk and tell him Chris Sanders sent you.</p>
